The Life and Career of the Actor, Musician and Twilight Star
Robert Pattinson became a household name (at least in the households of teenage girls) when he won the role of Edward Cullen in the movie adaptation of the wildly successful young adult novel, Twilight, but the self-deprecating actor has not allowed his recent fame to go to his head.
Robert Pattinson’s Early Life
Robert Pattinson was born in London, England on May 13, 1986 to Clare and Richard Pattinson. His mother worked for a modelling agency and his father imported vintage cars. He has two sisters, Lizzy, who is in a band called Aurora, and Victoria, who works in advertising. Pattinson attended Tower House School and Harrodian School. He joined the Barnes Theatre Company where he learned the intricacies of backstage work before he started taking on acting roles. At the age of 12, he began modelling, but this career was short-lived.
Film Work
Pattinson’s first film role was in the made for TV film Ring of the Nibelungs in 2004. He had a small part in Vanity Fair, but his scenes were cut from the final version of the film and only remain on the DVD. In 2005, Pattinson got his big break when he scored the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He reprised the role in 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Pattinson’s biggest role to date is playing Edward Cullen in the film version of Twilight, the popular teen novel by Stephanie Meyer. He beat out 3,000 other hopefuls to win the part. The sequel, New Moon, is presently being filmed in British Columbia. His most recent film releases are Little Ashes, in which he plays Salvador Dali, and the British comedy, How To Be.
Pattinson’s Music
Music has been a big part of Pattinson’s life since a young age. He plays guitar and piano and writes his own music. He sings two songs on the Twilight soundtrack called “Never Think” and “Let Me Sign.” It has also been reported that he will contribute songs to the soundtrack of How To Be. Other than the work he has done for movie soundtracks, he has not done any other professional recording.
Accolades For Robert Pattinson
During his short career, Pattinson has attracted plenty of attention, receiving accolades such as being ranked #23 on Moviefone's The 25 Hottest Actors Under 25 for 2008 and being chosen as the recipient of the 2008 New Hollywood Award by the Hollywood Film Festival Award Committee. For his performance in How To Be, he was awarded Best Actor at the 2008 Strasbourg Film Festival. He has been named Yahoo's Top Movie Heart Throb of 2008, Rolling Stone Magazine's Hottest Actor of 2008 and Entertainment Tonight’s top hunk of 2008. He was included as one of the LA Times’ Breakout Stars of 2008 and one of Forbes’ Breakout Stars of 2008, and he won Hello Magazine's Most Attractive Man Award of 2008.
Pattinson and Fame
Admitting he has had difficulty adjusting to the fame thrust upon him by his Harry Potter and Twilight roles, Pattinson takes a rare open approach to his ever-growing fan base. It has been reported that he has asked random fans to dinner and rumours abound on the BC set of New Moon of his cavorting with extras. His trademark messy hair, modest manner and self-deprecating humour are some of the reasons that fans flock to him. With the imminent release of New Moon, his star is sure to continue to rise.
