Robert Pattinson

More than Just an Actor

Sep 14, 2009 Lindsay Dellinger

Many actors attempt to cross over into the musical realm, but few are extremely successful. Robert Pattinson is capable.

Robert Thomas Pattinson began his acting career at the age of fifteen in London, England. He is best known for his role as the handsome and charming vampire, Edward Cullen, in the films Twilight and the upcoming New Moon, which is due out in theatres November 20, 2009.

In addition to the Twilight Saga made popular by author, Stephenie Meyer, Pattinson has also acted in films such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the 2008 British dramedy How To Be, the strikingly risqué, homosexual role as Salvador Dalí in summer 2009's Little Ashes, and 2010's Remember Me, co-starring Emilie de Ravin.

Pattinson's Backup Plan

Behind the pasty white makeup, the perfectly manicured eyebrows, the seemingly shy demeanor, and his signature messy coiffure, lies an extremely talented English musician. Pattinson is no stranger to the guitar, the piano, or the microphone, as he began performing live in various pubs around London at a fairly young age. With piano lessons beginning at age three and classical guitar lessons at the age of five, it's no wonder that he is musically inclined.

When asked of his musical influences and intentions, Pattinson cites Van Morrison as his greatest inspiration and states that music is his “backup plan” should acting not work out. Given Twilight's blockbuster popularity, it's difficult to imagine Pattinson in need of a “backup plan.”

At the 2009 Comi-Con Convention in San Diego, Pattinson proclaimed that he would love to be performing at more open mics in the future because it's “good for the soul.” As to whether his original music will be featured on the upcoming New Moon soundtrack due out October 13th, 2009, that is a negative. He tells OK! Magazine, “I really didn’t want it to look like I was trying to cash in. Music is my back up plan.”

Film Soundtracks

“Never Think,” which Pattinson co-wrote with fellow composer/musician, Sam Bradley, was featured in the chart topping Fall 2008 soundtrack to Twilight, as well as the sultry, two minute and eighteen second track, “Let Me Sign,” which was written by Marcus Foster and Bobby Long. Pattinson's influences are evident in his performance of this passionate song that sounds like a modern Johnny Cash meeting Van Morrison. The Twilight soundtrack debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

The soundtrack to How To Be features three original songs performed by Pattinson including “Chokin' On The Dust” and “Doin' Fine,” which were written by composer, Joe Hastings.

It is unknown whether or not fans can expect a full length debut album from the twenty-three-year-old actor/musician/writer, but to listen to more of Pattinson's original music, you can check out the fan-made myspace music page.
