The Iron Man Actor Appears to Have Hit His Stride

With his personal life settled, Robert Downey Jr. can now focus his energies exclusively on movies.

By all accounts, it would appear that Robert Downey Jr.’s personal chaos with drugs and alcohol that seemed to define him in his early years is behind him. Downey has wasted no time staging a comeback. While never officially leaving the movie business, Downey did find his career derailed for years due to his off-set hi-jinks. But now, Downey is back on top with big-budget movies and action franchises. Read on for a list of essential Robert Downey Jr. movies everyone should see.

Downey’s Recent Blockbusters

In recent years, Downey has found a new niche in Hollywood – action star. With ripped muscles and fancy weapons, Downey has become an actor Hollywood studios can depend on to open a movie or brand a franchise. Downey hasn’t completely abandoned his risk-taking, however, as evidenced by his dramatic turn in The Soloist or the daring role as Kirk Lazarus, the Australian actor in black face in Tropic Thunder. What follows is a partial list of Downey’s recent movies, followed by the character he portrayed and the year the movie was released.

Upcoming Downey Films

It doesn't appear that Robert Downey Jr. is slowing down any time soon. With several movies in the can and even more planned, Downey will be busy for many years to come.

  • The Avengers – Scheduled for a 2012 release, the film will bring together several comic-book heroes and villains such as Downey’s Iron Man, Scarlet Johannson as Black Widow and Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury.
  • Due Date – With a November 5, 2010 release date, the comedy details how Downey’s father-to-be character is forced to hitch a ride with Zach Galifianakis’ slacker to get to his wife before she delivers their child. The Hangover scribe wrote this script as well.
  • Iron Man 2 – Scheduled for a May 7, 2010 release, the sequel finds Tony Stark again donning the Iron Man custom, this time to face off against Scarlet Johannson as the Black Widow.

Whether fans prefer Robert Downey Jr.’s action roles such as Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, or his dramatic turns in movies such as The Soloist, or even his comedic roles in Tropic Thunder or the upcoming Due Date, there’s sure to be a future Downey-starred movie that fits the bill. For those fans who prefer the early works of Downey, or his historical films of the 1990s such as Redemption, Downey’s impressive roster of movies can certainly fit any moviegoer’s bill.
