Stupid, superficial, tasteless, talentless, and sluttish - these are just some of the words banded around when Paris Hilton is mentioned, and with her movie career well and truly underway, it's hard not to feel a certain amount of anger. Her blank face first appeared with the arrival of the now infamous sex tape, a celeb calling card that has been much copied in the preceding years, and since then she hasn't really gone away. A girl who was assumed to be a novelty, a circus act if you will, has ruthlessly dominated Celebville for the past eight years. Why?
She Fills a HoleSocialite, model, actress, author, recording artist and fashion designer. Quite an impressive list of attributes until you hear that it describes Paris Hilton, a girl adored by some, loathed more than Hitler by others, but it's easy to criticise when we still buy the magazines and watch her films. Jealousy is one way of explaining the united fury that her name provokes, but it runs deeper than that. Misogyny is partly to blame, especially considering that it's the male journalists who have the biggest "problem" with Paris, and it's not hard to imagine how she angers women with her blatant manipulation of her own sexuality. This might be a generalisation, but it is not hard to hypothesise that Ms. Hilton is fully aware of her own public image, using it expertly to reinforce her standing as one of the most famous women in the world.
And it's a world where suspicion is rife and tragedy is commonplace; superficiality has replaced the deep hole reality used to fill. Before we had family meals, life-long partners and The Waltons, now we have The Simple Life. Rather than screaming with anger the world seems to gently bitch, and public sarcasm has been firmly directed towards the heiress to a hotel fortune. Maybe in the existential nightmare that is the new millennium, Paris is the answer to our problems? It seems no-brainer entertainment distracts from all the other rubbish we encounter on a daily basis.
That's Hot
This reviewer wishes to start a new revolution, a new dawn and a new understanding. We should embrace Paris Hilton and all her kind, drop our pretensions and allow it to wash over us. Her catchphrases should be our new mantras, her image worshipped and her songs should begin every school day. When things are bad, can they get any worse? Why shouldn't we admit that she's fun, entertaining and yes, maybe even intelligent? Until then it seems that Paris Hilton will be having the last laugh.
