From vampire Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows to the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland to Tonto in the Lone Ranger, Johnny Depp takes on many challenging roles.

The handsome and versatile actor Johnny Depp has a busy acting schedule lined up for the next few years that includes roles in fantasy, adventure, serious independent film, and voiceovers.

About Johnny Depp

Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1963. His first film role was on Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. Since then, the versatile actor has played many quirky characters from pirate Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series to Willie Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He has portrayed true-life figures from director Ed Wood to Public Enemy #1, John Dillinger. Depp has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He often collaborates with director Tim Burton.

New Tim Burton Projects-Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows

Tim Burton’s much-anticipated fantasy Alice in Wonderland , which will be offered in 3D, is scheduled for release March 5 , 2010. Johnny Depp, of course, will play the Mad Hatter, in this new take on the Lewis Carroll classic. This visually colorful film combines live actors and computer animated creatures.

After he finishes filming Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Depp will join Tim Burton on another project, a film based on the popular Dark Shadows TV series from the 1960s. Depp will play vampire Barnabas Collins in this film, which is is scheduled to debut in 2011. A fan of the series, this is a role Depp is looking forward to playing.

Other Depp Projects in Production

Johnny Depp is producing as well as starring in The Rum Diary, a story based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson, author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This tale, set in a newspaper office in Puerto Rico in the 1950s, is about Paul Kemp, an alcoholic journalist who experiences love, jealousy and betrayal. The Rum Diary is planned for a 2010 release date.

The part-Cherokee actor has also signed up for the role of Tonto in planned Disney production The Lone Ranger. The casting for other characters for this show is still in the works. Depp will also do several voiceovers, including that of a household pet in a 3D animated film Rango, scheduled to come out in 2011. Other projects include Pirates of the Caribbean 4, also scheduled for 2011, and a sequel to Sin City starring Depp, Sin City 3, scheduled for 2012.

Terry Gilliam Films

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a fantasy film by author and director Terry Gilliam, is about the leader of a theatre troupe who has made a deal with the devil. In a Rumplestiltskin-like situation, he has promised his firstborn daughter to the devil, and must now find a way to save her. The leading role, which originally was to be have been played by Heath Ledger, will be played by Depp. This film will coming out in fall of 2009.

Rumor has it that Johnny Depp will not be playing in The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, another Gilliam project that has experienced many delays. The film will go on—but not with Depp, who has his plate full with a number of other projects.
