Stars have been the start of every fad and craze since time began so what's the latest - gaining weight for a movie. Which Hollywood movie stars are happy to be fatter?

You would think directors choose actors that already look the part, but these days' stars are asked to lose or gain weight in time for filming, sometimes with only 2 or 3 weeks to do it in. Their real bodies of sizes 6-8 just aren't realistic enough to play the part of a natural person. So let's see which of our favourite stars are the latest to put on a pound (lb) to gain a penny.

Renee Zellweger - There's Nothing Like a British Dish

Our favourite movie singleton, Bridget Jones played by actress Renee Zellweger. Renee put on a whopping 30lb and we loved her for it. The savior for all overweight, singletons made us feel we were not alone! Renee ballooned from a size six to 14 for both movies and after filming rapidly lost the weight again, but will she be piling on the pounds for the trilogy? Renee said "Maybe I will. It depends if it works into my life and if it's interesting."

The star admits, director Morgan Spurlocks, 'Supersize Me' movie has got her worried about the long-term implications her yo-yo dieting could cause to her health. She said "I had a panic attack with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you". Watch this space for Bridget Jones' 3, the minute Renee starts to gain weight fast will definitely be a dead give away.

Charlize Theron - Could Murder a Burger

The Oscar winning actress prefers a fuller figure and feels uncomfortable being too thin. Charlize gained 28lbs to play the part of Aileen Wuornos in 'Monster' and she wasn't a pretty sight, but what fantastic acting.

She said, "I played a woman with cancer in 'Sweet November'. I went down to a size 6 and I felt completely uncomfortable. I remember being cold and wrapping my arms around my body and feeling ribs and bone. I felt totally unsexy". This is what should make headlines - celebs that like being curvy, it's so much more attractive and not so disturbing.

Megan Fox - What a Transformation

The star recently dropped pounds filming her movie 'Jennifer's Body' and with a title like that the pressure was on to lose weight, but now the 'Transformers' babe has been told by director Michael Bay to gain weight.

Megan needs to gain 10lb in the 3 weeks before filming of the sequel commenced. That's nearly a stone and in less than a month! Is it possible and is it even healthy? Megan said "I'd lost a lot of weight and I got really scrawny, but I was told I had to put on a dress size for 'Transformers' because Michael doesn't like skinny girls". 'Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen' is currently set for release 26th June 2009.

But it's not just the female stars who's weight fluctuates for a role, oh no, male actors are in for a penny and a pound (lb) too. Tom Hanks had to gain weight for his one-man-show 'Castaway'. He said, "I was 40lb over. Just horribly fat." Hanks then had to cast away his excess weight in a year in order to complete filming.

Actor Christian Bale, however lost 63lb for his role in 'The Machinist', he said "I had what could be called a kind of stupid feeling of invincibility, like, 'Oh I can do it. I can manage it.'" We're glad to hear it Christian, being invincible is definitely a criteria for a role as Batman.

So are we still a weight-crazed nation, obsessed about our body image, trying to compete with the stars? Well if they're all putting on weight why are we losing it? It should make it a lot easier for us to look as good as they do. Perhaps now we'll be a healthier nation too.
